• True Strokes-Gained
WHY FIFTY ROUNDS?
WHAT IS TRUE STROKES-GAINED?
A 50-round moving average is the average strokes-gained of a golfer’s last 50 rounds at each point in time. We choose 50 rounds for the moving average because it is a large enough sample size to smooth the raw data and make it interpretable, but it’s not so large that it misses meaningful short-term fluctuations in performance.
“True” strokes-gained is simply regular strokes-gained adjusted for field strength. Its interpretation is the number of strokes better or worse a golfer was in a given round than the average PGA Tour professional in that season. Importantly, this interpretation applies to rounds from all tours in our data (PGA, Web, Euro, Mac, LA) as well as the individual strokes-gained categories, when available.
